Sri Lanka a south Asian destination located in the Indian Ocean, south of India is an Island country having 22.23 mn people accommodating in an area of 65610sq km., of which 98% land mass and 2% inland water bodies. The coastal belt around the island covers 1700km characterized by diverse coastal types including sandy beaches/bays ,lagoons, estuaries, rocky coasts, peninsulas, boulders, sandy, mangrove,. Satellite images show that the average sea water temperature around the country ranges between 26 and 28 °C. However the temperature in Northern coastal areas are slightly higher limiting the distribution of marine fauna and flora in the area.
